Wooden Hibachi with Makie Decoration, Japanese, Late Meiji Period

Kiri (paulownia) wood hibachi brazier, lined in copper. The outside is decorated with real gold makie (or maki-e) and lacquered chrysanthemum images. This was used for heating a space and the owner must have been a well-to-do individual to acquire such a piece. In a wonderful condition for its age. 

Late Meiji -early 20th century.
