Ainu Bear Carved Statue, Japan, 20th century

Massive in size, this wooden bear with a fish in his mouth is hand-carved from one wooden piece of cryptomeria (cedar) wood by the indigenous ethnic group called Ainu, living in Hokkaido in the Japanese archipelago of Japan.

Cedar wood, Japan, mid-20th century; in good condition, no cracks or losses.
