JP12 Antique Japanese Bandori (Back Pad), Early 20th century
Woven straw with indigo cotton binding on the straps and back. The front has a gossamer-like netting of fine thread banded together by coiled cotton rags. Hemp rope interspersed with coiled cotton rags in alternating pattern adds a distinctive look. The primary function is to protect a farmer’s back when carrying heavy loads like wood. When they are elaborate like this, they tend to be given as presents, usually for farmer’s wives to show off the craft skills of her husband. Early 20th century, Tohoku region, Yamagata prefecture. Measures 30” x 11”. In excellent condition.
