Japanese Sewing Box, Hari-Bako, Taisho Period

Japanese sewing box (hari-bako), wood with lacquer finish. The unusual squares of different hue gives it an “Art Deco” look which corresponds with the age of the piece. Used to be a utilitarian furniture in a Japanese home, it’s now sought after for other functions, like storing jewelry.
