JPNK0515 Fudo Myo

Ferocious looking and immovable, one of the most important deities of Japanese esoteric Buddhism.   His Sanskit name is Acala. He carries a sword in his right hand representing wisdom cutting through ignorance and a rope on his left hand to catch and bind demons. This particular piece is made of wood and painted, he has lost his left hand and both the rope and swords are gone. He has also lost his aureole. Black body with red and gold paint visible. Despite these losses, you can’t deny the power of this all powerful figure. Has definite signs of wear and very fragile as a result. Still, a truly wonderful, beautiful piece.

Measures 7"x 6". Meiji, early 19th century.
