Vintage Tibetan Gao with Green Tara, Copper/Silver, 20th Century

Gaos are Tibetan Buddhist prayer shrines that travelers carry for protection and prayers while on the road. They often contain relics, medicine, amulets and deities.  This particular one has a clay image of the green Tara inside the copper/silver casing. Green Tara is known as the Goddess of Activity. In Buddhism, the Color Green signifies activity and accomplishment. The shrine has relief religious symbols around it, artistically rendered and the whole piece is encased in woolen material including a carrying strap attached to both sides.
