JP0613 Antique Japanese Maiwai, Fisherman's Robe
Fisherman's Festival Robe with Crane and Turtle (tsuru-kame) motif. Both crane and turtle are felicitous motifs. The characters on the bottom part of the robe denote the family's name "Takeguchi", wishing good fishing for iwase (sardine). The upper part depicts a crane pulling a banner that reads "Kamemaru #7" which is the boat's name. Handpainted paste-resist on blue indigo, slight fading in some parts, good color and in very good condition. Japanese, late Meiji-early Taisho period, circa 1915. Measures 53" long x 52" wide.
