Farmer's Bandori (Back Pad), Japanese, Early 20th century

Antique farmer's Bandori (back pad), made of straw with simple binding and woven straps. Bindings at the bottom part have come apart thus leaving the straw loose and unrestricted. The pad protects the person's back when carrying heavy or delicate items. Definitely utilitarian and has seen a lot of use.

Straw, early 20th century, Northeastern Japan.

Dimensions: 29x15 in.
