Antique Japanese Horse Cover, "Uma-No-Haragake", Meiji Period

Literally, "horse belly covering". Originally made to protect horses from mosquito and other insect bites as well as from dirt and mud, it evolved into festival and ritual use. Wealthy merchants and samurai adorned their horses with richly decorated covers on special occasions. Bold Masa kanji in the middle surrounded by circle of clouds, tsutsugaki handpainted paste resist on indigo dyed cotton bordered by a striped band. Loops around are for ties. Most unusual and rare collector piece.
